BACK TO DAVE'S KITBASHES
These are theme armies I've painted, either for friends or for my own
amusement. They aren't necessarily winning armies (although I have won with
many of them), but they're nifty in my view.
- 21st Century Store
I made this custom army for 21st Century Comics and Games, my local shop.
Their store colors are blue and white, and the symbol is a 21 inside a C.
Better pictures now added.
Created for a friend of mine who's into mecha and Japanese schoolgirls, among
other things. I also tossed in a *Shaman to replace the Amazon when the army
needs healing. I've tried this army in three combats and it won two (it beat
a all-Uniques army and the 21st Century Store Army, lost to a Necro-Skeleton
force protecting a Magus).
- Squidforce Irregulars
As time goes on, I'll be making the occasional extra figure in Squidforce
colors, so that my friend has more flexibility in army building.
- * Centaur Archer with a squid brand not visible
in this picture. Retouched version painted to
look more like someone of Squid's acquaintance.
- * Technomancer with glasses. This is the
"self-insertion" figure for my friend.
- * and ** Iron Lungs
- * Shield Maiden with shield Dremeled down so I
could more easily add the Squidforce emblem. Her head had serious mold
irregularities that I didn't notice until I went to paint the eyes. Oops.
- ** Barber-Surgeon (not shown). I just drew a Squidforce tattoo on one of
- * Squid Gunner (from Soaring Gunner): Massive
rebuild. I pulled off the wings, rotated the legs forward as tentacles, made
long tentacles from wire and the blades left over from Omega Supreme and
Devastator (see Transformers section), plus googly eyes and some other
details added with plastic bits.
- * Whirling Keely Golem: Keely is a mutual
friend of Squid's and mine, and whirling is one of her schticks. So I
painted up a Whirling Golem in her favorite colors for Squidforce.
- * Goblin Grenadier: Purely for the fun of
having an exploding Goblin.
- Cybersquad Alpha
It all started with a Noble Archer that came missing an arm. I decided to
give it a replacement using some plastic rod and tube to make a bazooka.
Then I decided to do a whole squad, and got some cheap Freelancers and a
Blademistress out of a dollar bin at an area store.
- Katrin, the Cyberamazon: I used a "spare"
Freelancer gun as her shoulder cannon, cut up her sword to look more like an
energy blade, and connected the backpack to the sword hilt with a bit of
dental floss. She leads Cybersquad Alpha, a team of Black Powder Rebels who
have experimented with magically-attached prostheses (see the official Blade
Golem fiction for an early subject of such replacements).
- Tananna, the Cyberarcher: Two short bits
of hollow 1/8" tube glued onto 1/16" plastic rod form the bazooka for this
armless Noble Archer. She agreed to be Katrin's second in command after
getting her cybernetics (she also has a normal arm she can swap in during
noncombat situations). She enjoys blasting Orcs and hopes one day to find
the half-troll that chopped off her bow arm.
- Twingunner Freelancers: These elite gunners
volunteered for minimally invasive cybernetics that would strengthen their
arms and let them carry bigger weapons (no game effect, sorry). For a little
close combat help they have retractable blades attached to their free arms.
Two Twingunners work with Cybersquad Alpha at most times, and it's a post
fiercely competed for. I made them by gluing the guns taken from
Powergunners onto the bottoms of the Twingunners' hands, plus using thin
strips of plastic as the wrist blades.
- Powergunner Freelancers: Lost hands are
common injuries among those who use the somewhat quirky Khamsin pistols. So
I cut off the hands of three Standard Khamsin Freelancers and replaced them
with cannons made from various Lego Technic bits.
- Total = 95 points. Meant as an add-on.
- Cybersquad Beta
After a three-cornered battle left three Trollish brothers near death and
abandoned by their own army, the 'Ar brothers were rescued by Cybersquad
Alpha, which had arrived too late to affect the outcome of the battle. Their
mighty limbs rebuilt by the cyberartificers, the brothers now carried massive
gunpowder weapons too huge for even the Powergunners to heft. Telek'ar, the
youngest, carries a modified Boomer weapon. Twins Malak'ar (the eldest by
minutes) and Kaman'ar have special weapon harnesses that can carry either a
twin-barrelled cannon or a rack of rockets (a newly discovered application of
black powder). (The bazooka on the Weak unit comes from a SD Gundam model.
The weapons and shoulder rig on the others come from a Beetleborg toy I got
on clearance.) While the three brothers often work alongside Cybersquad
Alpha, they can frequently be found stiffening other mercenary units with
their expert application of supporting fire and their steely fists.
- Front View: Malak'ar is shown with rocket
pods, Kaman'ar with twin-barrels. But each has both weapons available.
- Rear View
- Total = 105 points
