The idea behind the Actionmasters was that these were highly-poseable Transformers that didn't transform. In Europe, they released a small number of Actionmaster Elites, which were highly-poseable Transformers that sorta transformed. None of the transformations was convincing, and most involved clipping vehicle bits onto the toy. I figure I can do at least as well.

The base figure I used was a S.T.A.R. Corps action figure, a knockoff (well, licensed) GIJoe space figure sold in blister packs at places like Wal-Mart and K-Mart. This time it was Vector, who I hadn't used in a kitbash before.

I decided for this project to try another automotive altmode, seeing as I was on a roll (chain-kitbashing...started this one the day after I finished Recoil, and I've got plans for another one already!). I built the front vehicle section out of standard Lego pieces, glued together once I was satisfied with the configuration. I filed down the top block so that the slope would be smooth all the way up. Since this left a gap in the top block (oops), I inserted a short piece of plastic rod as a cannon. The rear wheels came from lego wagon wheels cut apart and with the bases trimmed down and puttied to the forearms. Since I planned to connect the front half of the vehicle mode to the figure's feet, I glued Lego pieces to the soles and filled in the area with putty, for a smoother connection. The chest I eventually built completely of putty, after being unable to find a suitable piece from another toy to glue on. Finally, I decided the vehicle mode needed a little something, and I took the exhaust pipes from a Mechanix set I got (on sale, half off) and glued them to the sides of the head.

This was the first kitbash in a while that used only Testor's acrylic enamels for the paints (although the green is something I mixed), including the silver that comes in the new basic acrylic set (they've retired the Pactra name). I did most of the "gundamlines" with black ink, but used green ink on some of the areas painted green. The spark crystal is a little googly eye painted green with the Vehicon symbol drawn in with darker green ink. Yes, my Vehicon horde is growing...

VEHICON: Zigzag
Alternate Mode: Dragster
Function: Rapid Assault
Motto: "I'll pop a wheelie on your faceplate!"

Zigzag is always the first Vehicon to get somewhere...if only it was ever the RIGHT somewhere, the Maximals might be worried. As it stands, this speedy lieutenant usually arrives late in the battle unless carefully directed by his commander. In dragster mode he can reach half the speed of sound in under five seconds, leaving a distinctive stench of burned rubber and exhaust. The laser at his nose is mainly a shock weapon, as his accuracy at speed is almost zero. In robot mode he uses a rocket pack to assist leaps of up to a kilometer at a time, but he's incapable of true flight. The rapidly spinning wheels mounted on his forearms let him punch Maximals so hard that they almost fly over the horizon. In either mode, if in need of a hasty escape, Zigzag can emit a dense, noxious smokescreen from the tailpipes mounted to either side of his head.
